What We Do

As a YAAM, we represent our committee at the Tyonek Native Corporation Board of Directors meetings, corporate functions and shareholder activities. As a YAAM we also represent the outreach to the youth of Tyonek.

How We Started

In 1996, a joint meeting of the Native Village of Tyonek (NVT) IRA Council and Tyonek Native Corporation (TNC) Board of Directors passed a resolution to adopt the Young Adult Advisory Members committee, with the goal to promote young adult education of the process and functions of the Council and Board and provide a clear understanding of the leadership roles of the Council Members and Corporate Directors. Thus, paving the way for young adults of the Tyonek community to gain leadership skills.

How the YAAMS learn

YAAM representatives attend and participate at the TNC Board meeting and are assigned to various committees including their own YAAM committee, where they are encouraged to share and express their views, concerns, and ideas on the matters at hand. With the guidance of the board, Mentors, Management, and TNC staff, YAAMs are exposed to numerous business professionals and situations, where they can learn all aspects of the operations of TNC and demonstrate their skills with their participation, contribution and advocacy in the YAAM program.

What theYAAMs learn

Through the program, YAAMs learn to conduct a corporate meeting within the guidelines of Roberts Rules of Order and what it means to be a Board Member, Officer of the Corporation and a leader of our corporation.

Through participation in the meeting they learn about the issues facing the Tyonek people, the importance of strategic planning, focus and vision and gain leadership skills to excel in life.

What They Say....

"I learned so much. The Board respects my opinion and encourages involvement in meetings. I am so proud to be a part of this Corporation." Angie C.
